The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
