Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
